Dejon?s $50,000 boost

When Berkeley Institute students took steps to raise money for fellow classmate Dejon Simmons in December they never expected to raise $50,000, but that's just what they did ? with a little bit of help from teachers and family.

Principal Michelle Grant Gabisi this week announced that the school had set up a special trust account for 16-year-old Dejon, who suffered third degree burns to almost 95 percent of his body in a bike accident last July.

He is currently recovering at the Boston Shriners Hospital, a paediatric facility for severe burn victims.

Mrs. Grant Gabisi said they only expected to raise about $20,000 when they first decided to hold a charity walk and were overwhelmed by the generosity of students, teachers and their families, as well as members of the public who donated money.

Craig Bridgewater, a member of the Berkeley Board of Governors, and Deputy Principal Sandra Burrows were appointed trustees of the fund.

Dejon's stepfather, Raphael Simons, was on hand yesterday to receive letters from fellow students to take back to Boston.

He said Dejon's fighting spirit amazed doctors and nurses who have been treating him.

"He's out of bed and walking around and generally making good progress," he said.

The money will be used to help cover medical expenses and Mr. Simons said he was grateful to the students, teachers and their families for helping.

"As a former pupil at Berkeley, it warms my heart that you are taking care of one your own and I want to thank you for your generosity," he said.
