Drunk drivers banned, fined
Two drunk drivers were banned from driving all vehicles for 12 months and each fined $1,000 in Magistrates? Court yesterday.
Rajesh Krishnakunar, 25, of Garden Grove, South Shore Road, Paget, pleaded guilty to driving while impaired in Pembroke on December 11, 2005.
Crown counsel Oonagh Vaucrossen said at 3.25 a.m. that day Police were travelling north on Parliament Street when they saw Krishnakunar swerving on a cycle. ?They noticed he was braking continuously for no apparent reason,? she said.
And when they stopped him near the junction of Victoria Street, Krishnakunar was so unsteady on his feet he almost fell over, she said. ?I was not drinking,? Krishnakunar said at the time. ?I am a poor Indian.?
However, a breathalyser test found 157 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams in 100 millilitres of blood.
In another matter, Robert Malcolm Brown, 54, of Middle Road, Paget, pleaded guilty to impaired driving on Church Street on December 24, 2005.
Ms Vaucrossen said Police saw Brown swerving across the centre of Church Street at 3.15 a.m.
When Police stopped Brown near the junction of Burnaby Hill his eyes were glazed, he was unsteady on his feet and his breath smelled of intoxicants, she said.
?I had a few glasses of wine at dinner,? Brown told Police.
His breathalyser reading was 129 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner also fined Brown $100 for not having a valid driver?s licence at the same date and time.
