Future of Perfume Factory lots is secure - owner

People concerned about the future of the old Perfume Factory property can relax - it's not all going to be condominiums, one of the new owners said.

Ever since Meredith Head and her husband purchased two of the three Perfume Factory lots in Hamilton Parish they have had concerned Bermudians attempting to take their plants in the name of preservation.

Ms Head reassured residents that her land is not going to have a load of condominiums on it, and the other lot has been sold to a landscaper.

“The open space is going to be preserved and the gardens are going to be left,” she said.

“We bought two of the lots that were sold. The one that we didn't buy is the one with the actual perfume factory building.

“The lots we have are the farm lands that are there and most of the open space and woodland trail and formal garden.”

She does plan to convert the gift shop into a one-bedroom home, and will perhaps extend the building a bit in the future.

“Beyond that, we are not looking to build anything else,” she said. “We have leased out part of the farm area to a landscaping company and they have rehabilitated the slat house that was there before.

“They will use that for growing their landscaping plants.”

She said she knows that many people have grown attached to the Perfume Factory property and she wanted to reassure them. “The man who use to own it had gone through a lot of trouble to put in exotic plants,” she said. “He took special care to put nice things in there.

“A lot of people have just assumed that the property is going to be all developed. People have come in and dug out some of the shrubs and plants and things presumably thinking they'd rather see them moved than destroyed.

“A lot of people still think if they don't take them it will disappear. There is an old calabash tree in there, so we have people coming and grabbing calabashes.

“We don't want to make it so nobody can go in, but we prefer to invite people.”
