One man was arrested yesterday as fighting broke out after a football match in St. George?s.

Minor clashes were reported in the Wellington Oval area at the end of the Dudley Eve Champions Cup, attended by as many as 3,500 fans.

Police confirmed one man was injured ? and the same man was later arrested for an alleged breach of the peace. His injuries were not believed to be serious and officers said there were no indications weapons were used during the disturbances.

It is understood Police were called to the scene just after 5.30 p.m. and found the man injured. They left when he declined medical help and refused to give any information about how he was hurt.

But officers were called back to the same area moments later and made an arrest in a bid to calm the situation after they saw the man caught up in another skirmish, believed to have involved about ten people.

A Bermuda Police Service spokesman, confirming the arrest, said: ?There were a couple of disturbances in the Wellington Oval area this afternoon that attracted a crowd of people.

?One man was injured and he was arrested and taken from the scene.?

Wellington Oval became notorious for football violence in April 2004 after gangs of thugs invaded the pitch armed with weapons. Three men were jailed for trying to kill a man after one of the worst displays of public violence at a sporting event on the Island in living memory.
