Island?s prison officers step up to the wicket

It is unlikely that Bermudian prison officer Quentin DeShields and his team will be picked to play for Bermuda?s national cricket squad, but the 15-strong team gave it their best shot during a team-building exercise in the Cayman Islands.

Prison officers from Jamaica and the Cayman Islands also participated in the week-long programme which included a cricket match between the three teams.

Unfortunately Bermuda lost, but the programme was not just about fun and games.

Director of Prisons in the Cayman Islands, Dwight Scott, said it was all part and parcel of developing a greater understanding and bringing more cohesiveness among correctional officers in the region.

Meanwhile it was announced at the prison officers? meeting that another group of correctional officers from Bermuda would be attending a training session in the Caymans later this month.

Commissioner of Corrections in Bermuda, Hubert Dean, said yesterday that an exchange program between prison officers had proven quite successful two years ago and he was looking forward to renewing these efforts.

He added Mr. DeShields and the team had taken various goods with them to the Cayman Islands to distribute, as part of the ongoing hurricane relief efforts there.
