That was the message at the Bermuda Institute of Seventh-day Adventists yesterday during their 100 Men on Campus Day ? an annual initiative which seeks to promote greater interaction between students and the "significant male adult in their lives".

The day began with a joint breakfast and assembly, followed by an afternoon of workshops and culminating in a football match between the students and the various male attendees.

Institute director of development Frigga Simmons said that the event, which is now in its sixth year, is "a special day for everyone concerned".

"We recognise that there is a lack of positive male role models in the lives of children in today's society," she said.

"Here at Bermuda Institute, we take the opportunity on the 100th day of school to highlight the importance of the male role model. Research shows that this lack of male influence can make teenagers especially more vulnerable. Their presence is a as crucial to the healthy development of the child as that of the mother.

"The benefits of having a male involved in a child's life are many. Active involvement in a young person's life make a positive impact in the emotional development. This role model can be a father, teacher, coach, or anyone willing to devote time to make a difference in a teen's life. Every year the number of males on our campus increases and we are encouraging even greater participation in the future."
