Pembroke man ?not aware? bail conditions were breached

A Pembroke man accused of using offensive words in the lobby of Magistrates' Court landed himself in further hot water with Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner by failing to heed his bail conditions.

Devaun Cox, of Orchard Grove, appeared before the court on Friday to plead not guilty to using the words "ya ya ya pussy" while at the premises on January 6.

Mr. Warner then pointed out that Cox, 21, was previously granted conditional bail by Senior Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo on December 29 in relation to other charges.

Cox had failed to meet the condition of reporting to Hamilton Police Station as part of this bail, said Mr. Warner.

Cox responded: "I was not aware of the conditions. I signed the bail form but didn't read it. I didn't hear Mr. Tokunbo tell me the conditions of my bail."

But Mr. Warner told him: "There cannot be a situation where you didn't know. You had to know ? you just didn't bother. If you miss one more (appointment) I will send you to Westgate until your trial."

Cox will face trial on the matter of using offensive words on January 27, and was granted $1,000 bail until this time.
