Petition launched to support convicted murderer

Dennis Robinson

An on-line petition has been launched in a bid to clear the name of one of the men convicted of murdering the Cooper twins.

The website ? called ?Justice for Dennis Robinson? ? states that the only thing Robinson was guilty of was ?being in the wrong place at the wrong time?. An e-mail with a link to the site is also circulating. And understands that Kenneth Jermaine Burgess and Robinson came to blows as their trial reached a tense conclusion last week.

It is not clear exactly what day the fight happened last week, but sources have confirmed that a furious Burgess attacked Robinson in a prison van on the way back to Westgate from court.

Robinson is not believed to have been seriously injured in the altercation, which sources say was triggered by Burgess? frustration at Robinson?s defence case. Burgess told the trial he was never at the apartment when Jahmal and Jahmil Cooper died; while the defence team for Robinson, who did not give evidence or call any witnesses in the trial, said he was there but did not injure the twins.

A jury last week convicted Robinson 11 to one of murder. Burgess, was unanimously found guilty of murdering the 20-year-old brothers. understands both men are planning to launch appeals.

The trial heard how Burgess killed the twins after launching a violent attack with a metal baseball bat that left blood on the walls of his Devonshire apartment. Robinson did not assault the twins.

But prosecutors said he helped Burgess by guarding the apartment door during the beating, preventing escape.

The jury was told DNA tests revealed Jahmal?s blood in Robinson?s van and the prosecution said this showed he helped Burgess dump the brothers? bodies down Abbot?s Cliff and knew of his plan to murder.

Robinson had only been behind bars a few days starting a double life sentence when the plea to the Attorney General was posted on the internet.

Believed to have been created by his relatives or friends, the site calls for a review of the ?unsubstantiated? evidence against the defendant.

Nine people had ?signed? the site yesterday, with many speaking of their shock that the former Bermuda national footballer had been convicted and is now starting a prison sentence that will see him serve at least 15 years behind bars before parole is considered.

Robinson?s lawyer, Charles Richardson, yesterday said he believed the petition went on-line on Monday ? three days after Robinson and Burgess were found guilty amid chaotic scenes at Supreme Court.

Asked for his views on the petition, the defence lawyer said the website ?spoke for itself?.

In another development in the Cooper case, it has emerged that the question of whether Burgess serves more than 15 years behind bars might be resolved behind the scenes in the next six weeks.

At Friday?s sentencing hearing, prosecutors asked Chief Justice Richard Ground to use his discretion to increase the minimum tariff of 15 years for murder, laid down by Bermuda law through Parliament.

The judge said he did not have the power to do this. But he is due to make a report on both defendants for the Parole Board in the next few weeks, and he could ask the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for its comments as part of this process.

It is understood that the DPP will ask for Burgess to serve 20 years, if given the chance to have its say.

But it is understood the DPP will not be able to see the report from the Chief Justice, and it will only officially know if its submissions have been accepted once the Parole Board, which has the final say after taking the Chief Justice?s comments into account, meets to discuss Burgess? case in 15 years and he is freed.

Prosecutors made no request at Friday?s sentencing hearing for Robinson to serve more than 15 years, and they believe he should serve less time than Burgess.
