Policeman denies naming suspects

A Policeman denied that he dropped the name of a suspect in Jamaica while chatting to a man accused of importing cocaine worth more than $230,000.

Detective Sergeant Hayden Small was giving testimony in the trial of Jamaican Lincoln George Brown yesterday.

Brown, 37, from Rock Valley, Warwick pleaded not guilty on Monday in Supreme Court to charges of importing 939.81 grams of cocaine from Jamaica and possession of drugs with the intent to supply.

He was arrested on April 5, 2003, at Bermuda International Airport for allegedly importing the cocaine with a street value of around $234,960.

Earlier the court heard that eight pairs of jeans were found in Brown?s luggage ? seven had pouches taped inside back pockets.

Yesterday Brown?s lawyer Shade Subair asked Det. Sgt. Small whether he recalled a conversation with Brown at Hamilton police station during a cigarette break.

She alleged Det. Sgt. Small had said: ?That Barney has done this to a lot of people.?

However Det. Sgt. Small replied: ?I had no such conversation.?

Asked if he knew the full name of the man known as Barney, Det. Sgt. Small agreed that he was Kent Wilson who he described as a dark man, aged 30-40, about 5ft 7in to 5ft 9in weighing about 320 pounds.

Asked whether he tried to confirm whether that man was in Jamaica in the proceeding period to the importation Det. Sgt. Small said he had not and that he had not been leading the investigation.
