Prison for man who spat blood at cop
A 26-year-old man has been jailed for a series of assaults on Police officers including lunging at a female officer and spitting blood at one of her colleagues.
Marco Lovell, of Broome Street, Sandys, appeared at Magistrates? Court yesterday facing six charges relating to his behaviour on December 30.
Crown Counsel Wayne Caines told the court that the trouble began at 3.12 a.m. when unemployed Lovell was spotted on Kindley Field Road, on a Suzuki motorcycle.
He lost control of the cycle on The Causeway. His speech was slurred and his eyes were glazed. Admitting that he had ?had a few drinks, ? Lovell was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired but refused to give a breath sample.
As he was being put in the Police van he kicked P.c. Hector Cammock several times on the arm, but did not injure the officer.
Lovell was verbally abusive both in the Police vehicle and in custody and lunged at a female officer telling her he would not take a breath test, raising his handcuffed hands over her head as if to attack her, said Mr. Caines. He was taken to hospital after sustaining an injury to his mouth as officers struggled with him. Hhe twice spat blood in the face of another Police officer named Delroy Dyer.
Lovell later sprang out of his hospital bed and kicked P.c. Dyer causing chest pain.
Lovell admitted the charges yesterday. The Crown offered no evidence on the sixth count, which was refusing to Police a sample of breath. Mr. Caines told the court that the defendant has previous convictions for violently resisting arrest, obstructing the Police, possession of cannabis and possession of an offensive weapon.
Senior magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo sentenced Lovell to four months in prison for the assault and resisting arrest offences. He fined him $800 for impaired driving and handed him a 12 month driving ban.
