Sandys land battle looms

A Sandys Parish resident said last night he was not too worried about a legal notice challenging his, and 21 other residents? ownership of properties on Spring Benny Road.

Erville Ingham said the claim had been around for some 30 years and he had yet to see anything come of it.

Mr. Ingham was commenting after an advertisement appeared in yesterday?s from six people who say they are beneficiaries of the estate of John Augustus Virgil and claim they are the rightful owners of seven acres of land on Spring Benny Road.

The notice states: ?Like so many Bermudians who have lost their property due to error, fraud or mistake, we the named beneficiaries must continue to seek remedy with absolute resolve by whatever lawful means necessary.?

The claimants are Barbara L. Brown, Sylvia Davis, Marion Johnson, Gladwin Ming, Glenn Ming and Marie D. Spence.

In a legal battle that started almost 30 years ago, they are challenging the land titles of 22 residents of Spring Benny Road, Spring Benny Drive and Spring Benny Lane in Sandys, including Mr. Ingham.

Notice was also given that the beneficiaries would be sending the residents of the seven acres of land in question, a legal notice of intent by certified letter before civil action is taken.

One of the owners of property in Spring Benny Drive is the Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs Robert K. Horton, who could not be reached last night for comment.

Mr. Ingham said he would wait and see what happens this time around and ?go from there?.

He and his wife Deborah have lived in their house at 18 Spring Benny Road for almost 30 years.

He said last night he had built the house himself and was not planning on going anywhere.

One of the beneficiaries who is taking legal action, Gladwin Ming, refused to comment last night, saying it was a legal matter and ?everything you need to know is in the newspaper?.
