Second deliveryman robbed at knife point
For the second time in a week, a Four Star pizza delivery man was forced to hand over money and threatened with violence while trying to deliver a pizza in Pembroke.
On Wednesday evening a 28-year-old delivery man was robbed at knife point when he was delivering a pizza to a Deepdale Road East residence.
Two men approached the Paget man, one of the suspects held a knife to his throat while the other demanded money. The two suspects took $250 from the man?s wallet as well as a Four Star pouch containing $100 in cash. The suspects then fled the scene heading towards Curving Avenue. The victim sustained a minor abrasion to his neck as a result of the incident.
On Monday evening another delivery man was robbed on Mariners Lane. The 22-year-old delivery man was called to the lane at 9.40 p.m. when a man brandishing a baseball bat demanded money.
Several other masked men then appeared from bushes armed with baseball bats and machetes.
The suspects took the victim?s wallet containing $150 cash and a Four Star Pizza pouch with $105.
The suspects also took the bike keys off the 22-year-old victim from Pembroke before kicking his bike over and running off.
Four Star owner Marico Thomas said his company takes these attacks very seriously and has beefed up security measures that were in place prior to the recent robberies.
He told that delivery staff only carry $25 on them, unless they are returning from deliveries.
?We operate in a time where we understand that these things may happen and we are prepared for it,? he said. ?The delivery drivers do not carry much money with them so it is not worth robbing them.?
This week Mr. Thomas has taken a further precaution and asked staff not to carry personal money with them. He has encouraged them to keep their money in a staff safe or leave it at home.
Mr. Thomas also said that the company puts the safety of its workers before profits.
?We have a security measures in place when we take people?s addresses. If we or the driver do not feel safe delivering to the area we won?t. We can and have blocked areas before and prevented people from delivering there.
?We have delivered on the Island for a number of years and it would be a shame for the delivery service to end because of a bunch of idiots.?
Mr. Thomas also said he fully supported neighbourhood groups that are trying to tackle anti-social and violent behaviour in their areas.
A Bermuda Police Spokesman said: ?The Crime Prevention Office has given and will continue to give crime prevention information to fast food delivery services.?
He also indicated that an investigation is underway to determine if there are any consistencies between the two robberies.
Anyone with information about the incidents is urged to call the Police at 295-0011 of the confidential Crimestoppers hotline 1800-623-8477.
