Suspect in slaying nabbed in Jamaica

Kenith Clifton Bulford

The prime suspect in the 2003 murder of 20-year-old student Shaundae Jones has been arrested in Jamaica.

Kenith Clifton Bulford, also known as Ethon, was discovered by Jamaican police on Monday during a house raid in a district of the capital Kingston.

Bulford, who skipped Police bail in Bermuda after being interviewed in connection with the slaying, was arrested for possession of a small quantity of cannabis while he also faces immigration charges.

Police media relations director Dwayne Caines could not say last night whether a request for Bulford?s return to Bermuda would be issued, confirming only that local Police are working with their counterparts in Jamaica and that Bulford was wanted ?in connection with firearms charges?.

The arrest brings to an end a challenging 22-month search for Bulford, who has a history of going missing while on Police bail.

The 29 year old fled the country in 1996 during anti-drug Operation Cleansweep.

Just last month, lead investigator Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Crockwell told that ?things were in the pipeline? in relation to the hunt on which he was not at liberty to comment ? although he did express confidence that the case would eventually be cracked.

Mr. Jones was murdered with a single gunshot to the chest outside Dockyard?s Club Malabar on April 27, 2003. Mr. Jones, who would have celebrated his 22nd birthday last month, testified in the infamous Ice Queen murder trial of that year, where Jahni Bean and Quincy Stanley Brangman were acquitted of the lethal stabbing of Tekle Zion Mallory.

Mr. Jones? murder was thought at the time to be one a string of gang-related retribution attacks, although Police have always been at pains not to connect the two incidents.
