Airport readies for busy summer

Travellers arriving in Bermuda this summer will not be able to avoid the predictable queue in the arrivals hall ? but Customs officers are aiming to speed up process with extra staff during peak hours.

Collector of Customs Winifred Fostine-DeSilva said procedures at the Airport will remain the same, however, four cashiers will now be stationed in the arrivals hall to help speed up the process during the afternoon and early evening.

Mrs. Fostine-DeSilva said it was inevitable that people would have to wait in line as Customs officers have to carry out certain regulations such as compliance checks.

Mrs. DeSilva said the department is working to keep up with international arrival standards and she added that 30 to 40 minutes was within regulations for the amount of time taken for passengers to get through Customs.

?One week ago the British Airways flight went from aircraft to the taxi stand within 30 minutes which is well within international standards,? she said.

?Our officers are continually looking at ways to assist with the exchange rate issues and are looking into the improvement of passenger clearance issues. With compliance checks the public should be aware they are a necessary evil ? it is part of Customs regulations.?

Mrs. Fostine-DeSilva suggested visitors and residents check their paperwork as incorrectly filled out forms delay the process. Have your passport, ticket and boarding pass and Customs form ready when you arrive at the Customs desk.
