Always there for each other
One girl wins gold medals for blowing out her athletic competition, the other girl has cerebral palsy and has never been able to walk.
Fourteen-year-old Danila Martin and 11-year-old Yushae Simons may not appear to have a lot in common but take a look beyond the surface and you will see otherwise.
Danila and Yushae have always known each other, their mothers are good friends and they even live within two to three minutes from each other.
This past school year when Yushae started M1 at Sandys Middle School Danila, who had already been at the school for two years, offered to walk her to school each day.
?She helps me put my bag in my locker and helps me get to class,? Yushae continued.
Though the walk is only three minutes, occasionally after school the girls spend time together watching movies or sending text messages and the occasional giggle across the room to each other.
But their relationship is not always fun and games.
Danila admitted that at school Yushae has become an easy target for bullying because of her disability, therefore she often takes on the role of big sister and watches over Yushae.
?People do look at her different, but I don?t,? said Danila about her friend.
?She?s a regular person, and if you get to know her you would want to be her friend. I would tell people not to judge her by what she looks like,? she continued.
Since walking together the two admit that they have become closer and have got to know each other better.
?I think we?ve become closer because (Danila) helps me a lot. Like when I am sad because people tease me. She helps me when I am sad to cheer me up. She tries to make me laugh,? said Yushae.
?She was doing that yesterday, making me laugh,? she continued.
Danila also found it benefiting to be friends with Yushae. ?She?s fun to be around. She tries to do everything that a regular person would do. She?s just a straight up person.?
Danila graduated from Sandys Middle school early this summer and earned the honour of being awarded with overall athlete for her accomplishments in running.
In addition this summer Danila became the first female to be nominated and then win the Denton Hurdle Award for her accomplishments in her studies, community service as well as athletics.
Yushae admitted that she was proud of Danila?s accomplishments, saying: ?I am happy when she gets (awards)?.
Danila plans to go to Mount Saint Agnes in the autumn. Sadly, that means that she will no longer be able to walk with Yushae or watch over her at school. Yushae, however, plans to get an electric wheelchair and will be riding herself to school next year.
?I am sad that she?s not gonna be there to help me come to school,? said Yushae.
Though the two will be spending a little less time together next year, they still have the rest of the summer together, as Danila continues to help Yushae at The Kids Next Door summer camp.
?I watch Yushae, I get her lunch, watch movies with her and fix her hair,? Danila said about her commitments at camp.
Yushae, however, recalls other ways that her friend helps her out: ?She takes me to the bathroom, sometimes she gets my lunch for me and my breakfast and she watches me on holiday when my mom is away.?
One athletic event that the two were able to participate in together was the last Middle-2-End walk as close friends and family took turns pushing Yushae to the finish line, including Danila.
