A drunk driver who was three times over the legal limit was disqualified from driving all vehicles for 12 months and fined $400 in Magistrates' Court this week.

Shane Furbert, 40, of Pembroke, pleaded guilty to driving while impaired by alcohol on Middle Road, Pembroke, on June 13.

Crown counsel Wayne Caines said Furbert was seen by Police swerving a truck across the road.

Furbert's breathalyser reading was 241 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Woman stole alcohol to quench thirst

A woman claiming she stole a bottle of vodka and two bottles of Elephant beer because she was thirsty was given a conditional discharge in Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Debra Richardson, 47, of Riviera Road, Southampton, pleaded guilty to stealing the alcohol, valued at $22.35 from Lindo's in Warwick on May 4.

Richardson told Acting Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that she was remorseful and would not have stolen the alcohol if she had not been intoxicated at the time.

Richardson admitted that she had a drinking problem for almost 20 years.

Mr. Tokunbo replied “yes you do, your thirst is for alcohol” and asked her what she was doing to help herself.

Richardson replied that she was going to a “detox programme” next week at the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute.

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court that Richardson had previous convictions, some of a similar nature, dating back almost 15 years.

Mr. Tokunbo asked Richardson if she would keep out of trouble if he gave her a conditional discharge. She replied that she would.

Richardson was given a discharge on condition that for 24 months she enrol in an alcohol and drug treatment programme, submit to regular alcohol and drug testing and report to court every six months for a progress report.

Trial over alleged text message

A man who allegedly sent his girlfriend a text message saying he was going to kill her is facing a trial in Magistrates' Court later this month.

The 39-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, denied contravening a domestic violence order on May 24 by sending the message, which allegedly said: “I'm going to kill you. I just want to be together.”

Crown counsel Wayne Caines objected to bail saying it was a serious offence.

Defence lawyer Kim White said his client was wrongly accused.

Acting Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo granted the defendant bail of $2,000. He will return to court on Monday.

Kressin was fined $1,000 and was barred from driving for 12 months by Acting Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo.
