Man fined for obstucting Police
Pushing a Police officer into the road has landed a Warwick man behind bars.
Raymond Rogers appeared in court on Monday and admitted obstructing an officer carrying out a drugs search and violently resisting arrest.
Crown counsel Anthony Blackman said Police were patrolling Middle Road, Warwick, just after midday on Saturday when they saw three men sitting on a wall near Khyber Pass.
Seeing the patrol car, the prosecutor said one of the men threw an item from the wall and the defendant was later seen picking something up from behind the wall, before putting it in a jacket he was carrying and walking away.
The court heard Rogers was ?nervous? and ?fidgety? when stopped and refused to be searched by Police. Mr. Blackman said the defendant pulled away from officers and ran south down Middle Road, before being stopped and arrested. The prosecutor said a ?violent struggle? then started as Rogers pushed the officer and tried again to escape.
Rogers, defending himself, told the court that Police had deliberately picked on him, and he said the young officer should have shown some respect for his elders.
He said he was defending himself when he threw the officer in the road and added: ?He was out of order?.
Rogers, 51, of St. Mary?s Road, Warwick, was fined a total of $700. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said the fine had to be paid on Monday. When the defendant said he could not afford to stump up the cash immediately, Mr. Warner said he must serve 30 days in jail.
As he was led from court by Police, a clearly annoyed Rogers branded Mr. Warner ?wicked?.
