Bank resubmits renovation plan

The Bank of Bermuda has resubmitted plans to renovate its building on King?s Square in St. George?s.

The bank had submitted similar plans earlier in the month but they were rejected as they failed to comply with provisions of the Development and Planning (Applications Procedure) Rules of 1997. The initial application also did not provide enough information for a proper assessment.

The building in the main square is a listed building and the Development Applications Board was concerned that the proposed changes would be detrimental to its architecture and structural stability.

The building stands on the site of Bermuda?s first Government House, built in 1613.

It later became a garden for the second Government House which was built in 1699.

The site then remained vacant until a grocery store was built on the site in 1930, while the current bank building was built in 1970.

The bank is seeking to renovate the building in order to change front entrance and add a wheelchair accessible ramp.

The bank has also applied to decorate the interior of the building, add new teller counters and improve the electrical wiring.

Karen Madeiros, public relations manager for the Bank of Bermuda, said the revised plans also ?include internal changes and the addition of a sliding Bermuda Cedar and glass door?.
