Bermuda services buzzing about FA Cup match-up

SUNDAY'S FA Cup action throws up plenty of tantalising ties ¿ none more so than the inter-club derby which pits First Division side Prospect United against Commercial B outfit Prospect/Fire.

Last season it would have looked a dead cert for the higher division favourites but Prospect/Fire are reborn this season.

The team, which has often played shorthanded in recent years, now has to turn players away on matchdays after resigning former players as it prepares to compete in the World Firefighter Championships in London next year.

The team now boasts some quality in its line-up including frontmen Kevin Mooney, Kingsley Mundy and midfielder Mark (Beaver) Ray.

Ray won the FA Cup with Vasco De Gama in the mid 1990s and was also a losing finalist with Devonshire Colts.

Prospect/Fire have only lost one game and is one point off top spot in Commerial B (group two) while Prospect United are in mid-table.

Ray, who last played for Prospect/Fire about a decade ago, before returning this season, said: "It's good to have everybody come back to the Fire Service to play. We have a pretty balanced team.

"We are doing pretty well and anything can happen in one game, we have a good chance. You can get just one chance to score and you have to take it in games like this."

And the match-up has the Bermuda's services buzzing.

"People are excited, everyone around the job is coming to me talking about it. We are definitely geared up for it. There is a little bit of pride at stake."

Commercial A side Robin Hood face a tough tie against Boulevard. Hood, who used to dominate the Commercial League, have been on the wane in recent seasons before regaining some of their form in this campaign.

Hood Manager Paul Scope said the key to Hood's return to form has been an influx of younger players, garnered from Island XI which folded, which has meant more players and a better structure.

Asked what he was expecting he said: "The Alamo".

The tie couldn't be much tougher but Scope said his team has an outside chance as cup games do produce upsets. Last week Commercial outfit Lobster Pot beat First Division opponents Paget 1-0 with a Joey Azman strike early in extra time. However other lower league sides perished.

Scope knows Boulevard well from his days managing in the top flight.

"But most of our players will not know them at all. They are a very good, youthful side with lots of skill.

"Boulevard must be strong favourites, but we hope to give them a good, competitive game."

Commercial A strugglers Tuff Dogs face a tough test against St. George's Colts while Commercial A side Valley will be up against a combined BAA side at Malabar.

BAA have put in a side in the First Division this year after a long break but it has yet to pick up a point while their Commercial outfit is mid-table. However a combined BAA team beat the Robin Hood 4-3 in a friendly on Wednesday and manager John Doran hopes for a similar result on Sunday.

He will also likely throw in a few under-18 players into the mix.

He said: "It's a welcome break from the league and a good way to get some of the First Division guys integrated into the club atmosphere."

But he said Valley were no mugs and were unlucky to go down two seasons ago before coming up this season. "It will be a tough battle. They are not a bad side. If we can get over this hump maybe we can have a little surge."

Meanwhile Southampton Rangers face St. David's while Ireland Rangers take on X'Roads Warriors.
