One arrest after counterfeit $50 bills passed
Police are warning about counterfeit currency after fake $50s were circulated over the weekend. At 2.05 a.m. on Sunday, Police attended the East Broadway Shell Service Station on Crow Lane in Pembroke after a report of two counterfeit US $50 dollar bills being passed.
At around 11 p.m. on Saturday, a man paid for his gas with a fake US $50 dollar note, left, then re-appeared a few minutes later and began to pick up groceries which he paid for with another US $50 dollar note. The cashier later discovered the currency was counterfeit.
The suspect is a thin, dark-skinned male, approximately 18, dressed in a dark bubble jacket and riding a dark Honda Lead scooter.
Meantime, at 3.45 p.m. on Sunday, Police attended the Esso City Tiger Market on Richmond Road in Pembroke after a report of counterfeit currency being passed. A man went to the cashier to exchange four US $50 bills for Bermuda currency. The cashier accepted the US cash and exchanged it, but later discovered that the US $50 notes were counterfeit. He was later arrested.
Recently Police have noticed an increasing amount of Bermuda and US counterfeit currency in circulation on the island.
A spokesman said: "We are reminding everyone to be vigilant when accepting cash from individuals. Always look for authenticating marks like watermarks, and feel the texture of the money to see if it is a photocopy.
"We are reminding all businesses, especially liquor licensed premises, to be on the lookout for counterfeit Bermuda $50 notes bearing the serial number D/I-889821 and counterfeit Bermuda $100 notes bearing the serial number C/I-438445."
Woman arrested for impaired driving
A collision between a motorcyclist and a car at the junction of Glebe Road and Bishop Spencer Road in Pembroke put a 49-year-old Pembroke man in hospital over the weekend with a serious injury.
The rider of the motorcycle was taken to the KEMH at 3.15 a.m. for treatment of a serious leg injury, not believed to be life threatening. The driver of the car, a 28 year old Warwick woman was not injured and was subsequently arrested for suspicion of impaired driving.
Pizza delivery man attacked
A pizza delivery man was attacked by a group of thugs over the weekend at Fentons Drive in Pembroke. The victim, a 34-year-old man employed at Four Star Pizza left the shop in Flatts to make a delivery to a Fentons Drive residence.
He was approached by four or five young men who kicked and punched him repeatedly. As they tried to check the victim's pockets, he shouted for help and the men escaped.
The man suffered from bruising to his upper lip. The suspects are described as young black males wearing white T-shirts with long sleeves.
They are all believed to be between 16 and 19 years old. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with information to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.
