Windsurfers disrupt Regiment marksmanship training
Wayward windsurfers sailed into the path of a Regiment firing range, causing training for new soldiers to be called off.
The incident resulted in a warning yesterday that members of the public must heed signs telling them to keep away from the south shore beaches.
Around 150 new recruits were on the Chaplin Bay range on Friday afternoon, with eight at a time firing live rounds. Signs and sentries were posted on the beach to warn people off, but the Regiment boat troop was unable to patrol due to rough conditions.
According to Regiment press officer Stephen Caton, two windsurfers entered the water from further down the shore and then sailed dangerously close to the firing. This caused the training to be called off amid safety fears. With live firing continuing throughout this week, Major Caton warned: "The beach areas are off-limits when the signs are posted."
