Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident on Khyber Pass in Warwick on Sunday night. Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said the 57-year-old Warwick man was travelling south on Khyber Pass at about 10 p.m. when he was involved in a collision with another vehicle.

The second vehicle did not stop. The injured man was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was treated for facial injuries and a broken leg. Mr. Caines said he was in a stable condition on a general ward. Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident, or anyone with information to contact P.c. Christine Mullings on 234-1010. Mr. Caines said there were 23 damage only road traffic collisions and seven road traffic collisions resulting in injury over the weekend.

He said five people were arrested for suspicion of impaired driving. ?The Bermuda Police Service is noticing an increase in the amount of road traffic collisions taking place on the Island?s roads and we are urging the motoring public to obey the speed limit and to use care, caution and courtesy at all times,? he said.

Meanwhile Police also responded to five incidents of breaking and entering over the weekend. In one of these, Police were called to a home in Sanz Crescent in Paget around 3 p.m. on Saturday when a woman found an unknown man in her kitchen.

Mr. Caines said the woman asked the man what he was doing there and the man claimed to be looking for someone. ?She then informed him he had the wrong house and told him to get out, which he did,? she said. He said a short time later the suspect, a 41-year-old Devonshire man, was arrested in the Harvey Road area in Paget. Inquiries into the incident are underway.

A 38-year-old Sandys man was fined $750 in Magistrates? court yesterday after pleading guilty to possession of cannabis.

Kenneth McRyan Butterfield was arrested on April 19 in Sandys after Police searched his vehicle and found a twist of 4.48 grams of cannabis. Crown counsel Graveney Bannister said Police had acted on information that people in the area were using drugs.

He said Police asked Butterfield if he had drugs in the car to which he replied ?no?, but when Police found the twist of cannabis, he replied ?you can arrest me, but you can?t stop me from smoking it?.

Butterfield, who is an electrician at Nine Beaches, told the court that he had a group of people in his car earlier that evening and was in a bar when Police arrived and told him they were going to search his car.

Despite an argument by Mr. Bannister that if the drugs did not belong to Butterfield, he should reconsider his plea, Butterfield remained adamant that he wanted to plead guilty.

?I just want to get this over with,? he told the court. Acting Senior Magistrate Tyrone Chin told Butterfield to pay the fine by May 13.

A 43-year-old Devonshire man, who stole alcohol and meat by putting them down the front of his pants, pleaded guilty in the Magistrates court yesterday.

The court heard how Kevin Sinclair Davis had entered Hayward?s Liquor Mart on Middle Road on April 5 and put two bottles of scotch whisky down the front of his pants before leaving the store. Crown counsel Graveney Bannister said Davis was caught on CCTV committing the crime. The bottles of scotch were never recovered.

In the second incident, Mr. Bannister told the court how Davis had entered Arnold?s Market in Pembroke on April 30 and put four packs of tenderloin steak down the front of his pants before calmly strolling from the store.

He was caught outside by the assistant manager, Stanley Murphey. He said the assistant manager gave chase, but when he caught Davis and tried to detain him, Davis punched him in the shoulder. Lawyer Leo Mills told the court Davis had a drug addiction and had stayed off drugs for three years until January.

After a short discussion, acting Senior Magistrate Tyrone Chin handed down a deferred sentence and told Davis to enrol in a drug rehabilitation programme at Turning Point for the next week. He said he wanted to see Davis in court on May 9 with proof that he had been to at least four sessions and wanted a report from a drug counsellor before sentencing him. Davis was released on $500 bail with one surety.
