Bermudian injured in Miami recuperating

A young Bermudian seriously injured in a Florida boating crash has left hospital and is recovering at home.

University of Miami student Joanna Stapff is on the road to recovery, her father Kurt said last night.

"She's out of hospital and is in her apartment recuperating with her mother," the Paget resident told The Royal Gazette. "She's feeling much better."

Ms Stapff, 24, was rushed to hospital with internal injuries after the single boat accident last month. Her co-passenger was world wakeboard champion Danny Hampson, 17, who suffered a broken neck.

Ms Stapff, a former pupil at Bermuda High School for Girls, was apparently thrown from the vessel after it veered into mangroves and struck a tree. She suffered seven fractured ribs, a lacerated liver and a punctured lung.

The art and communications student had been on a respirator to help her breathe for about ten days after the crash, but was moved out of intensive care following surgery.

Her father Kurt, of Middle Road, said last night: "Her breathing is much better. She's even thinking of coming to Bermuda in her summer holidays."

His daughter's age and her love of sports had helped her recovery, Mr. Stapff said.

"She's on the mend," he added.
