Bermudians rally around grieving family
An overwhelming outpouring of support has followed the death of 20-year-old Samuel Fubler.
Mr. Fubler, of Scott's Hill Road, Sandys, died at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) after the motorcycle he was riding on collided with a van and a wall on Middle Road, Southampton. Police named him the third road fatality of 2006 ? the sixteenth death on Bermuda's roads in the last 13 months.
His father, trucker George (Chicken) Fubler and his mother Catherine, said last night 75 people were at KEMH after the accident to help support the loss of their first-born son.
"Samuel would not want his Mom and Dad to go through any extra concern," his father said. "He never thought of himself, he always wanted to serve other people. He was selfless. He went about to do that, to help anybody, even children. He spoke to people. After graduating with honours from Sandys Secondary Middle School and CedarBridge Academy, Mr. Fubler went on to work at the local branch of the Bank of America, they said.
"His teachers all liked him," Mr. Fubler said. "He was obedient and did what was right. He gave us no problems. We always found, whatever he wanted to do he would put his whole heart into it. If he knew he had to do something he would put his heart into everything.
"I don't know if you are supposed to thank people after the funeral, but I thank everyone who is here," he said. "The phone has been ringing off the hook."
Relatives had even flown in from abroad when they heard the news of Wednesday night's tragic accident.
"Even people on the road at the accident were so helpful," Mrs. Fubler said. "They were like ? 'Lady I'm sorry it's your son'. At least he was with people he knew."
His grieving mother said her second-oldest child aimed high in life and set examples to his three sisters and five brothers.
Mr. Fubler's hobbies included football ? or having a kick-about with his brothers on the weekends, as his father put it.
Yesterday, Police continued to appeal for witnesses to the fatal road traffic collision. Witnesses should contact P.c. Broomes on 234-1010, P.c. Evelyn on 299-4265 or the main Police number on 295-0011.
