Boy, girl rescued in water scare
A have-a-go hero saved a girl and boy from drowning after they got into difficulties in the water at Flatts on Sunday night.
The drama began at around 8.05 p.m. when Police were called to Flatts Bridge after a 12-year-old girl from Devonshire slipped into the water.
The girl, who had been with other children at the dock opposite the Bermuda Aquarium when the incident happened, was overcome by the strong current in the inlet which swept her out into Harrington Sound.
A Police spokesman said: ?A 15-year-old Hamilton Parish boy jumped overboard in an effort to rescue the girl.
A 35-year-old Hamilton Parish man then took a punt out into Harrington Sound and managed to rescue both the girl and the boy. However, the trio got into difficulty as the man attempted to row to shore, due to the strong current. In spite of this, he managed to safely navigate the punt to a nearby dock.?
Police have not released the names of any of those involved in the rescue. The girl was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where she was found to be in good health.
?Police officers spoke with the parents of all the children involved and advice was given in hopes of avoiding a similar incident in the future,? said the spokesman. The Bermuda Fire Service and ambulance personnel had also assisted at the scene.
