A babysitter was today convicted of breaking the leg of an infant in her care.

L’Naiye Simmons was just five months old when he suffered the injury at the hands of Betty Jean Steede, 51.

More than a year later, he is still receiving treatment. His emotional mother, Laneh Simmons, said of Steede’s conviction this afternoon: “I just hope she gets what she deserves.”

It remains unclear just how the infant suffered the spiral fracture to his thigh-bone, which doctors said would have taken considerable force to inflict.

However, the Supreme Court jury unanimously convicted Steede of causing grievous bodily harm to the infant through reckless conduct when he was in her care at her Swansbay Hill, Pembroke, home.

Puisne Justice Carlisle Greaves granted Steede bail. Her sentence will be determined at a later date, once background reports have been completed.
