Breaking News: Corporation workers down tools

Corporation of Hamilton workers march from the Corporation's headquarters on Dundonald St. to City Hall Monday morning to present their grievances over wages, disciplinary inconsistancies and general heath and safety to the Mayor of Hamilton and other Corporation officials.

More than 70 Corporation of Hamilton workers downed tools this morning to march on City Hall in protest at working conditions.

Their grievances date back several years and include pay, inconsistency of disciplinary action, concern over a lack of health and safety in the depot yard and job training.

Workers have not yet gained union representation but presented a unanimous front yesterday as they marched on City Hall.

Two representatives from the Workers’ Joint Consultation Committee were due to meet Hamilton Mayor Sutherland Madeiros and two aldermen with a letter outlining their grievances.

JCC representative Carlton Simmons, an electrician, told The Royal Gazette: “This is a last resort and so let’s just hope we don’t get to a stage of further action. This morning is a demonstration of the workers’ frustration and to show our unanimous support.”
