Breaking News: Portuguese national found guilty of killing sports star in bike accident
A 32-year-old Portuguese man was today found guilty of killing teenage sports star Machai Campbell.
A Supreme Court jury found Sergio Pacheco was responsible for the 19-year-old’s death on December 30, 2008.
Pacheco, who hails from the Azores, had moved to Bermuda only a month before the accident.
It took the seven-woman, five-man jury two hours to find him guilty.
Pacheco had been charged with causing Mr. Campbell’s death by driving a motorcycle in a dangerous manner.
The two men were travelling in opposite directions along Cavendish Road, Pembroke when the accident happened around 12.30 p.m.
Pacheco, who was driving into Hamilton, overtook a car and was in the easterly lane when he collided with Mr. Campbell.
Puisne Judge Charles Etta Simmons remanded Pacheco in custody this afternoon. He will return for the March 1 arraignments session.
