Breaking News: Second Westgate prisoner on drug charges

A 35-year-old prisoner pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis while in Westgate Prison when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Kirk Mundy, who is already serving 14 years for robbery and use of an imitation firearm, had 18 months added to his sentence after he pleaded guilty to having 0.96 grams of cannabis in his prison cell.

Mundy is the second prisoner charged with possession of cannabis to appear in Magistrates’ Court in the past two days.

Yesterday, Jason Wheatley, 28, had 18 months added to his current sentence of 14 years after he pleaded guilty to possessing 0.17 grams of cannabis in his prison cell.

Both men were given six months for possession of the drug and an additional 12 months for possession in an increased penalty zone, namely — Westgate prison.

Mundy was one of two men arrested in connection with the murder of 17-year-old Canadian Rebecca Middleton in 1996. He was allowed to plead guilty to a lesser charge of accessory after the fact before forensic tests were complete, and was jailed for five years.
