Breaking News: Teenager denies attempting to murder couple outside cinema

Sanchey Grant

A teenager has denied charges of attempted murder over the shooting of a couple as they left Southside Cinema last November 13.

Sanchey Grant, 19, from Warwick, is accused of trying to kill Devonshire Cougars footballer Shaki Minors and his pregnant girlfriend Renee Kuchler, a CedarBridge Academy teacher.

The pair were shot around 11.20 p.m as they left a late showing of the film ‘Precious’. Mr. Minors and Ms Kuchler were rushed to hospital but have since recovered from their injuries.

Grant is further accused of possessing a firearm and ammunition.

He pleaded not guilty to all the charges when he appeared before Chief Justice Richard Ground during the monthly arraignment session at Supreme Court today.

A second man, Jahmel Blakeney, 28, is also accused of attempted murder in relation to the same incident. He was arrested in Bermuda after the shooting but left the Island for the US after being granted Police bail.

Blakeney was charged in his absence on April 26 and arrested at a residence in Brooklyn, New York on June 10. Prosecutors are currently seeking his extradition to Bermuda.

According to the latest court paperwork from the US District Court in Brooklyn, the Government has provided Blakeney and the court with a set of papers submitted by Bermuda in support of its extradition request.

The court will hold a case conference on August 25, when Blakeney is due to state whether or not he seeks to fight the extradition proceedings. He is currently being held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York.

In the meantime, Grant must return back to Supreme Court on September 1 for a trial date to be set. No mention of the Blakeney case was made during his court appearance, and he was remanded into custody.
