Tourists enjoying lunch at Waterlot Inn yesterday watched in stunned silence as a motorcyclist slammed into a wall, plunged over it and down a 12-foot embankment where he ended up on some rocks in Jew?s Bay ? less than five feet from the water.

Brothers Tom and Brian Steinhoff, who work at Sea Venture Watersports at the Waterlot Inn, were the first on the scene of the accident.

Tom Steinhoff said he was working on a jet ski when he heard the bike hit the wall and looked up.

?There was a loud crunching noise and I saw this guy flying over the wall and hitting the rocks down below,? he said.

The 34-year-old Warwick man was travelling east along Middle Road when he apparently lost control of his bike and hit the wall.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said the man was thrown over the motorcycle?s handlebars eventually hitting a tree trunk.

A Police boat had to be called in to transport the man to Waterlot Inn where an ambulance was waiting since he could not be reached by foot.

Mr. Steinhoff said he ran along the road to where the cyclist had gone over and motioned to his brother Brian to help.

?Brian had just come back in the bay on his jet ski and since he?s a certified lifeguard, I knew he could help,? he said.

Brian Steinhoff said he saw his brother running along the road and thought there must have been an accident.

?At first I couldn?t see anything because there was no car crashed on the road and then I saw this guy down on the rocks wearing a helmet and Tom was pointing to him,? he said.

He said he was the closest, so he went straight over to help.

?He was screaming in agony and must have been in a lot of pain. He was in a very uncomfortable position and we tried to keep him in the same spot, but he was moving around too much so we moved him into the flat bottom of a punt where we held him still until the Police boat arrived,? he said.

The injured man was taken to Waterlot Inn by Police boat where an ambulance was waiting.

Buses and cars were diverted from Middle Road to South Road shortly after the accident.

Last night the man was reportedly in stable condition at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
