Bus accident shocks passengers
Bus passengers were left dazed and shocked on Saturday when the bus they were travelling on was involved in an accident in Southampton.
Police said the accident occurred along Middle Road near Whale Bay Road at about 2.15 p.m.
The bus, which was travelling west, was struck by a protruding piece of metal on a trailer being towed by a large Mack truck.
The truck was travelling in the opposite direction. One of the windows on the bus was smashed in the process.
Passenger Rita Tucker said that all the passengers were ?pretty shaken? by the incident even though no one was hurt.
Mrs. Tucker was travelling home on the bus which she said was fairly full at the time and a three-year-old girl was sitting by the window that smashed.
?(The little girl) was with her grandparents who had taken her to the Annual Exhibition that morning,? she said.
Mrs. Tucker said she was sitting behind them and could see the large truck coming from the front.
?You know what it?s like when you can see something is going to happen, but you can?t move. I was paralysed. I saw this metal piece coming right at the bus window and I just couldn?t move,? she said.
She said some tourists were sitting in front of the little girl and they ducked as the large metal object struck the window behind them.
?The little girl was not hurt, no one was, but there was glass everywhere and everyone was very shaken,? she said.
She said the child was surprisingly calm and seemed more upset by all the attention she was getting from fellow passengers than by the accident.
Mrs. Tucker said other vehicles on the road were honking in an effort to warn the bus driver, but he did not seem to be aware of the danger until it was too late.
She said the bus pulled over almost immediately and they disembarked to wait for another bus to collect them.
