Captain injured during fire drama on ship
Crew members extinguished a fire on board a Brazil-bound cargo ship which was diverted to the Island this week.
The captain of the vessel was rushed to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital suffering from spinal chord injuries and smoke inhalation where he remained in the Intensive Care Unit.
He is expected to stay on the Island for at least six weeks while he recovers from his injuries, a Meyer Shipping spokesperson told The Royal Gazette. Harbour Radio was notified of the fire when the Panamanian ship was 80 miles north of the Island.
Fire Service personnel were still attempting to determine the extent of the damage, but the ship expected to leave Bermuda shortly.
Ship diverted after man falls ill
A Bahamian-registered ship was diverted to the Island yesterday after a male crew member suffered a stomach ailment.
The Castillo De-Arevalo was en route to Spain from Texas when a 39-year-old man was picked up in St. George's and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was treated for stomach pains.
Visitor injured at pedestrian crossing
A visitor to the Island was in collision with a truck on Front Street on Wednesday.
Police said that the 42-year-old male driver was issued a ticket at the scene for allegedly driving without due care and attention.
The 59-year-old female visitor, who sustained facial injuries, was at the pedestrian crossing at the junction of Front and Parliament streets at 12.55 p.m. when the collision occurred. The red Isuzu truck was damaged in the front.
Thief makes off with cash
A woman said $900 went missing after her home on Inghams Vale in Pembroke was broken into on Wednesday.
Police warned residents not to leave cash unattended.
