Car crash victim Demika pays tribute to her angels
The 21-year-old Devonshire woman injured in a horrific accident on Marsh Folly Road last month is back at home and thankful to be alive.
On March 4 at about 11 p.m. Demika Gibbons was driving along Marsh Folly Road near Dutton Avenue when she apparently lost control of her vehicle.
The vehicle broke through a wooden railing and hurtled almost 70 feet down an embankment at Pembroke Marsh.
Rescue crews had to scale the embankment twice - first to tend to Miss Gibbons and then to carry her up to the waiting ambulance.
Miss Gibbons was in hospital for about a month and yesterday said she had a hard time remembering anything about that night.
“I just don't remember anything. I woke up in hospital and that was all,” she said.
She suffered a broken pelvis and has to wear a brace indefinitely, but said she was doing much better and was extremely grateful to be alive.
“I just wanted to thank everyone who supported me throughout this time, especially Dr. Milan Oleksak and the nurses in ICU and the Perry Ward of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital who showed me so much love and patience during my stay there,” she said.
She felt it was the support of her family, church and friends that helped her recovery.
“I am forever grateful to the public who helped me, including my angels, Veronica Douglas, Leeroya, Desai Jones, Jordan Hill and Peter Brooks. You all assisted in saving my life,” she said.
According to earlier accident reports, members of the public who witnessed the accident scaled the embankment to lift the car off her.
She had apparently been thrown from the vehicle which ended up rolling on top of her.
“I wanted to thank the general public and all who constantly had me in their prayers day and night,” she said.
She added that she was taking it easy for now and was not sure when she would return to work.
Miss Gibbons is a shareholder administrator at the Butterfield Bank.
