Commissioner?s House applies to erect Quincentennial mural

The Bermuda Maritime Museum has made a Planning application to install a two-storey tall mural depicting Bermuda?s 500-year history inside Commissioner?s House.

The application, submitted on April 19, asked for a proposed second floor storage room over the existing building and a covered porch on the ground floor.

?The pillared hall is going to have an extraordinary mural of the history of Bermuda,? executive director of the Maritime Museum, Dr. Edward Harris said. ?All four walls of the two-storey room are going to be painted by a local artist and will depict scenes from the history of Bermuda.?

The mural will be painted on 40 separate pieces of plywood which will be placed together to form the whole picture.

Once complete, the mural will be open to the public.

The pillared hall is a ?connecting room? that joins the main building of Commissioner?s House to his office and the old stables, Dr. Harris said.

The new room serves two functions ? it will waterproof the pillared hall and will provide a place to store the House?s hurricane shutters.

?The room will be built in such a way that we can remove it at any time in the future so that the historic fabric of the building is not affected,? Dr. Harris said.

The plan has been already vetted by the Bermuda National Trust and the West End Development Corporation, he added.

The Historic Building Advisory Committee was also invited to perform a site visit.

In other Planning news, Joslyn Brimmer of No. 2, Perimeter Lane, Pembroke, has applied to the DAB to expand an existing day care into a pre-school for 25 children.

Her daughter Josette Brimmer said they ?needed more room to take in more kids?.

?I want to bring it out of my main house and make it into a separate facility,? Ms Brimmer said.

The day care presently has room for ten children, but she would like to have room for 25, if given approval by the DAB.
