Cox: Major changes afoot for Post Office

Finance Minister Paula Cox said the Bermuda Post Office is about to undergo major changes to upgrade the services it provides.

Ms Cox, speaking in the House of Assembly on Friday, highlighted the interesting position the postal service has in that it is one of the few Government services that competes with the private sector.

Under the guidance of Postmaster General George Outerbridge and international consultants, a plan has been devised to ensure that quality of service increases.

The House of Assembly was told that there needs to be "sweeping changes to the legislation governing the Post Office," including changes to internal procedures and ensuring there is greater accountability from delivery services.

Moreover, the geographical model of sub post offices that has been previously used will move towards a business model.

Instead of dividing the offices by eastern, western and central locations the offices will now be divided into operational and administrative offices.

This transition is expected to make the postal system more efficient.

Another central aspect of the planned changes is providing Post Office personnel with the tools they need to do their job.

Ms Cox said: "It is the people, the hard-working men and women of Bermuda's Postal Service, who are the bedrock of the organisation."

Government has already approved a new senior management structure which will enable the service to streamline its functions.

She also told the House that a more detailed report was being compiled by the Department of Management Services and should be completed soon.
