CURE to hold race seminar

Politicians, business and community leaders are invited to attend a leadership diversity training seminar this month.

The Commission for Unity and Racial Equality (CURE), the Ministry of Community Affairs and Sport and Oakland, California based Stir Fry Productions are putting on the event.

CURE executive officer Myra Virgil encourages everyone to come with an open mind, as there is always something to learn.

"There is not a day that goes by that race issues are not raised in the media," said Ms Virgil.

"If you come in with an open mind there is always something that you can learn, whether it is personal development or interpersonal development."

CURE and the Minister of Community Affairs and Sport Dale Butler have invited politicians, senators, civil service executives, judiciary members, business and community leaders, who have a vested interest in improving race relations on the Island.

The keynote speaker will be Lee Mun Wah director of Stir Fry Seminars and Consulting, which has worked with corporations, government agencies and educational institutions to facilitate diversity issues and conflicts.

Mr. Wah, a Chinese American, is a community therapist, an award winning filmmaker, educator, performing poet, and Asian Folk teller.

The seminar begins on January 23 and continues on the 24th.

It will look at the diversity in all forms ? from people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, to differences in language, place of origin, home environments, family structures, sexual orientation, religion and social standing.

"Diversity and equality are human and deeply personal issues," said Ms Virgil.

"We must recognise that discrimination of all kinds is experienced in largely different ways with commensurate outcomes.

"There are ongoing inequities but a variety of experiences, which should not be discounted."

This premier event will be an experiential process in negotiating race and diversity issues.
