Drivers banned for driving while impaired

A Magistrate warned four drunk drivers to stay away from happy hour after they were each fined $1,000 and banned from driving all vehicles in Magistrates? Court on Tuesday.

Gary Christopher Adams, 24, of Underhill Crescent, Pembroke pleaded guilty to impaired driving on Middle Road, Southampton on March 3.

Crown counsel Graveney Bannister said at 10.14 p.m. that day, Police pulled Adams over and noticed his eyes were glazed, his breath smelled of alcohol and he was unsteady on his feet.

?Unfortunately, Mr. Adams, your feet are going to be your only carriage,? Magistrate Tyrone Chin said.

Mr. Chin said alcohol was a drug that happened to be legal.

?It is the most widely used drug in Bermuda,? Mr. Chin said. ?Not one family in Bermuda is not affected by alcohol.

?Alcohol is a depressant. They call it happy hour. They should call it depressant hour,? Mr. Chin said.

?If you are depressed and you drink it will make you more depressed.?

In another matter, Donna M. Hughes, 44, of Middle Road, Southampton, pleaded guilty to impaired driving on Horseshoe Road, on Friday, February 24.

?I had one glass of wine,? Hughes told Police.

Mr. Bannister said Hughes was not in total control of her vehicle, her eyes were glazed and her breath smelled of alcohol.

A third drunk driver, Burnell Virgil, 74, of Paynters Road, Smith?s, also pleaded guilty to driving while impaired on March 1, on Middle Road, Southampton.

Mr. Bannister said Police saw Virgil?s car cross the centre line on several occasions and nearly hit a cycle in the other lane.

?I had four or five drinks,? Mr. Virgil told Police. ?How much do you want to let me go home??

Virgil?s lowest breathalyser reading was 191 milligrams in 100 millilitres of blood, Mr. Bannister said.

The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

?It?s all true but I had a flu bug,? Virgil told Mr. Chin before his sentencing. ?I was changing a CD. It made me swerve.?

And Michael Brian Smith, 43, of White Sands Road, Paget, also pleaded guilty to impaired driving on March 9 on South Shore Road, Paget.

Mr. Bannister said at 1.35 p.m. a Police car spotted Smith?s auxiliary cycle swaying close to the centre line and wobbling.

?Yes, I am drunk,? Smith told Police. ?Yes, I had plenty.?

Mr. Bannister said Smith?s eyes were glazed and his breath smelled of alcohol.
