Fishermen banned from docks
A fisherman has expressed his disgust at the Corporation of Hamilton?s decision to ban the sale of fish at the dock alongside Number One shed on Front Street ? accusing them of brazenly trampling over a hundred years of Bermudian heritage.
Speaking to yesterday, David DeSilva said he had attempted to moor his boat this morning alongside the dock where he sells his weekly catch every Friday, only to be confronted by signs which stated that boats were no longer permitted to dock in the area for more than 15 minutes excluding tourist vessels.
?Fisherman have been selling their wares in that location for years,? he said. ?And now all of a sudden, without any warning, we are told we can no longer do so.
?We haven?t been given any reason for it either. I think it?s disgusting. There has never been any problem there before so I just cannot understand it.?
His boss John Gibbons, meanwhile, who was forced to set up shop on Court Street, labelled the site ?the number one spot in Bermuda for selling fish? and again questioned why the Corporation had acted without any consultation.
?I just find it unbelievable that they can do something like this and not have the decency to come and talk to us.?
Repeated calls to Corporation Secretary Kelly Miller were not returned by Press time last night, so it is not yet clear why the ban has been enforced.
