Four banned from the road for driving while impaired
Four drivers were fined $1,000 each and given a 12-month driving ban last week in Magistrates? Court after admitting to driving drunk or refusing to take a breathalyser test.
Lalit Chhibber, 31, of Roberts Avenue, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to drink driving on Front Street on May 14. ?I?m sorry I did not know the rules and regulations of this country,? Chhibber told Police at 2.20 a.m. that day.
Crown counsel Cindy Clarke said that Chhibber?s lowest breathalyser reading was 279 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, nearly three-and-a-half times the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
Another driver, Jelani Scott, 25, of Beacon Hill Lane, Sandys, was also taken off the road after pleading guilty to the alternate charge of refusing to take a breathalyser test on May 6.
Ms Clarke said Police saw Scott?s car swerving on and off the centre line of Middle Road at 3.20 a.m. that day.
?You all are bored tonight,? Scott told Police after they stopped him. ?I am not supplying any breath.?
Police noticed Scott?s speech was slurred, his eyes were red and he smelled of intoxicants.
And Henry Laing, 59, of Princess Street, Pembroke, also admitted to refusing a breath test and failing to stop after an accident on May 9.
Ms Clarke said another motorist saw Laing strike the side of a car but continue to drive west on Dundonald Street. Police arrived at the scene at around 8.35 p.m. when Laing said he did not know he hit the car.
However, Police observed his eyes were glazed, his speech was slurred and his breath smelled of intoxicants, the prosecutor said.
Defence lawyer Llewellyn Peniston said Laing had been suffering from severe stress and physical challenges and had a ?momentary lapse?.
Laing was fined $1,000 and given a 12-month driving ban for refusing the breath test and $300 for failing to stop after an accident.
And an accountant admitted to drink driving in Magistrates? Court last Wednesday.
Police stopped Paul Jones, of South Road, Paget, on his bike near his house on April 20.
The 26-year-old was fined $1,000 and banned from driving all vehicles for one year.
