Furbert: PHC should have been warned about wall
Pembroke Hamilton Club president Chris Furbert was furious this week at the Department of Planning for giving residents permission to build a wall across Stadium Lane, Warwick, without first consulting PHC or advertising it in a newspaper.
However, Acting Director of Planning Brian Franklin said it was not Planning policy to advertise one-day work permits and a Stadium Lane resident said the wall was not a problem.
Mr. Furbert ? who is also the president of the Bermuda Industrial Union ? said that letting residents block the access without first letting PHC members know was ?totally disrespectful? by Planning. ?I am upset at Planning because they issued a one-day building permit,? Mr. Furbert said. ?The residents made an application to block a road off that people used for access. It should have been advertised or PHC should have been advised.?
Mr. Furbert said the wall built outside No. 7, Stadium Lane, was part of a plan that was approved by a Special Development Order in 2003 that was to be used build a new Esso gas station in Warwick. ?My understanding is that PHC had an agreement for works to be done and for the road to be closed off,? Mr. Franklin said. ?It was something that had always been planned. Mr. Furbert agreed the intent was to close the road off.?
Resident Gary Madeiros did not want to comment on the wall but did confirm that two new access roads to Stadium Lane had already been built and no one was blocked in. ?I have no idea why Mr. Furbert has a problem with the wall,? Mr. Madeiros said.
One new road was added to the west of the new Esso station to access Stadium Lane.
Another one was added to the east of the station, which will eventually lead to an as yet unbuilt new PHC Clubhouse.
Mr. Furbert said there was no expected start date on the new Clubhouse, however, said it would hopefully not be in the too-far distant future.
?Once we get started construction will take 15 months,? he said.
