Gazette employees launch complaint against Police

The two employees involved in a violent altercation with Police officers on Court Street two weeks ago have both registered official complaints against the officers? actions with the Police Complaints Authority.

Advertising representative Shawn-Nae Cann claims she was assaulted by the officer who arrested her for alleged foul language as they apprehended her husband, print manager Jamie Cann.

Mr. Cann, a black man with dreadlocks, has told the PCA that he was racially stereotyped by Police officers who approached his car parked on double-yellow lines outside a bakery on Court Street ? while he is also seeking compensation to the tune of $1,300 for damage to his car allegedly caused by one officer flinging his wife on the bonnet in an attempt to restrain her.

However, it is understood the Police are still considering whether to press further charges against the couple, with the only charge currently laid down that of illegal parking.

Police media relations spokesman Dwayne Caines said yesterday news of any further charges would be announced in due course.

The Canns? and the Police?s version of events are completely different.

Mr. Cann claims he was waiting for his wife ? who was collecting their lunch ? outside the Court Street bakery when one officer leaned in the window of his parked car and said ?dread, you waiting on some dope??.

He admits reacting angrily to what he felt was a question based purely on his appearance and questioning: ?Do you guys not have anything better to do??

Mr. Cann then claims the officers said they were going to search him and his car under the Misuse Of Drugs Act, but arrested him when he refused to divulge any of his personal information.

His wife insists she was merely attempting to talk to her husband when they were putting handcuffs on him and they became violent towards her when she stated ?I can?t f******g believe this!?, throwing her on the bonnet of the car and then onto the ground ? actions which resulted in some bruising.

By contrast, Police claim they merely asked Mr. Cann to move off the double-yellow line while there was never any mention of drugs or a search.

They claim he was arrested for unnecessary aggression while Mrs. Cann was taken into custody after repeated verbal volleys and violently attempting to obstruct her husband?s arrest.

A large crowd witnessed the confrontation and it is understood that both sides have witnesses to corroborate their stories.
