Getting ready

Preparation: Crew of the Freedom Schooner Amistad reef and furl the topsail as weather began to deteriorate yesterday afternoon. Reefing is intended to reduce the area of a sail on a sailing ship, which can improve the ship's stability and reduce the risk of capsizing, broaching, or damaging sails in a strong wind. The Freedom Schooner Amistad arrived in the Island on the 30th of last month and had intended to depart last Thursday for the Dominican Republic however the vessel has been trapped here due to the inclement weather we are continuing to experience. Photo by Mark Tatem
