High winds, rough seas keep fuel tanker away

The Iver Excel lies off the North Shore. The tanker has been unable to dock due to bad weather.

A Dutch fuel tanker has been anchored off Bermuda for six days due to high winds and seas which made it unable to unload its cargo at the Ferry Reach oil docks.

Visible at night due to its bright lights, the Iver Excel has been anchored off the North Shore ever since she arrived in Bermuda on Wednesday, March 22, Captain John Moore of Meyer Shipping said yesterday.

"She berthed on Friday and pumped off a portion of her cargo," Capt. Moore said.

However, when strong winds hit again she was forced to leave the docks and head for deeper waters, he said.

"In all likelihood she will go alongside (today)," he said. "Because of high wind and sea conditions on the North Shore she has been unable to dock at Esso."

Capt. Moore said Exxon Mobil chartered the Iver Excel to deliver fuel to Bermuda.

Her last port of call was St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands and her next stop will be Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
