Holiday marred by road accidents
A spate of road traffic accidents left at least three people in need of hospital treatment over the Bermuda Day Holiday.
In the first incident in the early hours of yesterday morning, a woman visitor was knocked down by a biker while attempting to cross Front Street.
Eye-witnesses toldthat the tourist walked out onto the road after leaving Docksider?s Bar shortly before 2 a.m. One eye witness said the biker tried to avoid her, hit a parked taxi, and then ricocheted into the pedestrian.
Police and ambulance services were called to the scene as stunned spectators stood by. The tourist was put on a stretcher and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. The bike rider received treatment at the scene but it is not known if she required hospital treatment.
Last night Police were unable to provide any details about the crash or the condition of the victims.
In the second incident a participant in the Bermuda Day Marathon was hit by a van while completing the course. understands the jogger was at the back of the field and was running alone when he was clipped by a passing van. An eye-witness said the man then smashed into the vehicle?s windscreen.
A member of the public who administered first aid and did not wish to be named said the runner was taken to hospital by the St. John?s Ambulance Brigade.
He said the runner had abrasions on his hands and face and appeared to have an ankle injury.
Again Police last night could give no further details about the incident.
And in a third incident another tourist was involved in a crash on Mullet Bay Road shortly after 4 p.m. Police Media spokesperson Dwanye Caines said the tourist, who was riding an auxiliary cycle, was heading east when he crossed into the wrong lane and hit a car travelling in the opposite direction.
The tourist was taken to the hospital suffering from a broken jaw. The driver of the car was not injured.
The roads into and out of Mullet Bay Road was closed to allow traffic collision investigators to examine the scene, causing extensive tailbacks.
Police are appealing for anyone who saw the accident to call P.c. Watson at the St. George?s Police Station on 295-0011.
