Limousines to hurt business, taxi drivers say
Taxi drivers are holding a meeting to discuss their displeasure with a proposed amendment which would see luxury limousines come to the Island and some are considering holding a rally at the House of Assembly. Michael Ray, President of Bermuda Taxi Association Ltd., said taxi drivers are concerned that it will hurt their business and feel they should be given more time to see if the new GPS system alleviates current ?circulation? issues. He confirmed that there will be a meeting to discuss the Government?s proposal to allow luxury taxi on the Island. The meeting will be held at the Ex-Artillerymen?s Association tomorrow at 7 p.m.
?Taxi drivers are very concerned about this,? he said. ?Simply because we just spent a lot of money to get the GPS up and running. We have had no chance to prove that it works.?
Mr. Ray said he did not believe luxury limos would help the Island because Bermuda already has enough taxis. The problem, he said, was circulation and the GPS system would hopefully deal with that. Yesterday, Transportation and Tourism Minister Dr. Ewart Brown said he was surprised with Mr. Ray?s comments because the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport has been in regular contact with him.
