Missing pension funds lead to strike threat
Anger over thousands of dollars of missing pension money is spurring the strike threat from Guardwell Security?s Airport staff.
Yesterday, Pension Commissioner Peter Sousa confirmed a complaint had been made months ago about missing contributions and the company was warned to rectify the matter.
Two weeks ago Guardwell CEO Roland Pearman put out a memo saying the contributions had been brought up to date but an investigation by his own consultant revealed six staff were still missing funds from their pension accounts.
Mr. Pearman did not return a call yesterday, however, the memo makes it clear he is anxious to settle in order not to lose the Airport contract which is up for tender again.
One staff member said thousands of dollars of pension funds, going back months, were missing and fed-up staff were in a mood to carry out their strike threat after their 21-day notice expires on May 9.
He said staff were also owed months of back pay following a pay rise ? a claim the company has said will be covered within eight weeks.
The staffer said: ?There are a host of disagreements with this company but the missing pension money has staff angry.
?I personally went to Colonial?s office and got a print-out which showed a zero balance.
?So, not only has the company not contributed its part but it also has withheld monies deducted from staff members. For myself, more than $1,500 was deducted from my pay. So the total is in the thousands.
?If an individual was to get caught in such activity we would see them before the courts.
?Since the discovery of the missing funds by the staff the company has been funnelling money into the pension fund in order to cover its tracks.
?A credible reason for the missing funds has not been given, nor has the lost interest been addressed.
?The other issues have been on the table for a while now and the company has asked for more time to keep things hush, hush.?
Mr. Sousa said he believed the company was sorting out the missing pension money and Guardwell had been given the usual time frame to do so.
But he said withholding pension contributions was a very serious matter and the courts could order negligent companies to repay money as well as dish out five-year jail sentences and $50,000 fines.
Government is trying to mediate the Guardwell dispute but has contingency measures involving Police in case Guardwell is unable to fulfil its duties which include access control, perimeter and airfield patrols.
