New setback for cash-strapped Hamiltonian

The cash-strapped Hamiltonian Hotel and Island Club is under serious financial attack following the launch of a legal petition by Global Construction Ltd. to wind up operations at the debt laden business. first reported the petition on March 24, although at that stage Global Construction?s legal representatives, Marshall Diel and Myers, were unwilling to divulge their client?s identity.

The amount of money allegedly owed is still unknown, with the facts set to emerge on April 22 when the petition will be heard in the Supreme Court.

Repeated attempts to contact the Hamiltonian were unsuccessful, with a recorded voice message telling callers that hotel operators were ?not available?.

Meanwhile, according to information which has been in the public domain for more than two years, the financial difficulties of the Langton Hill enterprise run even deeper.

The Auditor General?s 2003 report revealed the Hamiltonian was more than $200,000 in arrears on Government pension contributions, $400,000 in arrears on payroll tax and more than $200,000 in arrears on land tax. And Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) president Derrick Burgess said last December that the hotel had not made any social insurance contributions for more than 20 years.
