Pembroke South West: Jackson takes seat for UBP

Louise Jackson of the United Bermuda Party comfortably won district 20 Pembroke South West last night.

Mrs. Jackson took 698 votes, with Progressive Labour Party candidate Neville T. Darrell trailing well behind with 155 votes.

Mrs. Jackson, the founder of the Jackson Dance School, had always been confident of victory in what was considered to be a UBP stronghold.

Turnout was high, with 77.06 percent of eligible voters going to Mount Saint Agnes School to cast their ballots.

Speaking just before polls closed, Mrs. Jackson said: "It has been excellent, I am almost overwhelmed. I just feel there is a tremendous amount of support, the constituents coming out in a very steady stream since 8 a.m.

"I think we have worked hard and had a very hard-working campaign team.

"I have canvassed by seeing or on the telephone at least 99 percent of the constituency so I feel very confident."

Mr. Darrell, a security consultant and taxi operator who was a former captain of the Bermuda National Cricket Team, was realistic about his chances.

Speaking before the count, he said: "It is going very well. I am not concerned about winning the seat, quite frankly, I am looking to the long-term.

"My concern is about this Island, period. Bermuda.

"As far as winning the seat is concerned, no one knows how it will turn out."

Mrs. Jackson was running for the House of Assembly for the first time, but Mr. Darrell stood for the PLP in 1980.
