Sentencing date set for Martyn

The Canadian lawyer convicted of conspiring to fraudulently obtain his father?s Bermuda status will be sentenced in early July by the Supreme Court.

During a busy morning arraignments session yesterday, Chief Justice Richard Ground ordered lawyer Robert Martyn to appear in the Supreme Court on July 7 for sentencing. Martyn, who is represented by defence lawyer Victoria Pearman faces up to two years in jail.

Trial and mention dates were also set for more than five individuals who are charged with various drug related offences.

Top road runner Jamal Hart, who has pleaded not guilty to importing over half a million dollars worth of cannabis, will appear in the Supreme Court for trial on November 28. Hart, 37, of Frog Lane, Hamilton Parish, is charged with importing cannabis in 2003. He is also charged with possession of the drug and a scale to weigh it on.

Alleged drug mule Patrick Stamp will appear in the Supreme Court for mention on July 4. Stamp, represented by lawyer Craig Attridge, is charged with importation and possession of cocaine with a street value of close to $170,000 in January, 2003. The trial was aborted in April this year after a jury member was seen fraternising with Stamp?s family members.

In other drug-related cases, a 22-year-old man will appear for mention on July 4. Jahkemo Virgil of no fixed abode, was caught with $300,000 worth of cannabis in November, 2004. He is represented by lawyer Peter Farge.

Kevin Wayne Smithof Union Street was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to supply in February, 2005. He will appear for mention on July 4 and is represented by lawyer Shade Subair.

A trial date has been set for Shaunnah Melanie Dill, 19, of Sousa Estate Road, Devonshire, who denied importation and possession of diamorphine. The trial will start on September 26 and Dill is represented by lawyer Elizabeth Christopher.

The trial of Pembroke youth Takayhi Walker, 19, will take place on October, 4. Walker is charged with possession of cocaine, with intent to supply. Walker is represented by Victoria Pearman.

Former Bank of Butterfield branch manager Mia Shawnette Butterfield who admitted to stealing more than $46,000 from the bank had a June 10 date set for her sentencing. Butterfield, 37, of Wellington Slip Road, St. George?s, pleaded guilty to stealing $41,960.67 in Bermudian currency and $4,340 in American currency from the Bank of Butterfield between September 2001 and January 2003.

Coreen Elizabeth Ford who pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding, will appear in the courts for mention on July 4. The charge stems from an incident in June, 2004, but was an amended indictment, as originally Ford had been charged with unlawful wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. She had pleaded not guilty to the original charge.

Ford?s lawyer, Llewellyn Peniston, said the court was waiting for a completed social inquiry report before a sentence is handed down.

Joseph Moniz Lima, 39, of no fixed abode, denies two charges of robbery and assault and will appear for trial on October 10. He is represented by attorney Darrell Clarke.

Michael Eugene Douglas, who denies entering a home at night with intention to steal on December 14, 2004 will go to trial on September 6. Douglas, 24, of no fixed abode, is represented by lawyer Shade Subair.

Another case has also been set for trial in the fall. Howard Tyrone Darrell, 40, will appear for trial on October 4. Darrell, 40, is charged with stealing more than $4,600 in a series of thefts.

Keivon Jamel Gift, who is charged with importing cannabis and cannabis resin with intent to supply on December 9, 2004 pleaded guilty to the charges yesterday. Gift, who appeared with his lawyer Larry Scott, will be sentenced in the Supreme Court on June 3.
